Discussion

 The southerly, and latest, of two east/west aligned enclosure ditches in area 12AB (with 012AB07197 to the north). Three further ditches on the same alignment (012AB07194 and 012AB07171 and 012AB00128) lie to the south, probably all phases of the same type of enclosure pattern. Unlike these northern ditches, no entrances were present in the ditches to the south. The two northern ditches extended westwards into area 12AC, joined by the results of a geophysical survey. The two ditches were excavated as one in this area (012AC00125, assigned to this master as this is the latest phase). This master also includes a slot (012AB00120), cut through the east terminus of segment 012AB00356. This is likely to be associated with the enclosure entrance, probably a gate slot or similar blocking mechanism.

The ditch cut through three ditches (012AB00415, 012AB07192 and 012AB07199 ) and a pit (012AB00413). Small pit 012AB00640 was cut through the south side of the ditch. The line of post holes to the north of the ditch (part of master 012AB07200) were believed to be part of the entrance structure but they could equally be later features unassociated with these enclosures. The exact nature of the enclosures is difficult to determine due to the complexity of features in this area. It is likely these ditches formed the south side of a square enclosure; with the north/south ditches in areas 12AA and 12AC (the east and west sides, respectively) and the east/west ditches in the north of 12AB. The enclosure is almost certainly Anglian in date, possibly as late as Middle Saxon (based on stratigraphic evidence).
